The international expedition to study the snow leopard on the South Chuya Range of the Altai Republic will take place from September 19 to 27. In 2022, 13 individuals were confirmed there. The Association of Nature Reserves and National Parks of the Altai-Sayan Ecoregion reported this on its website.

The expedition is attended by scientists from Mongolia, Kyrgyzstan, Russian experts from the snow leopard habitat regions in Russia - representatives of the Sailyugemsky National Park, the Sayano-Shushensky Nature Reserve (Krasnoyarsk Territory), the Directorate of Protected Natural Areas of Altai (Altai Republic), the regional public environmental organization "Asia- Snow leopard" (Irkutsk region and Buryatia), "Ubsunurskaya Kotlovina" nature reserve (Tuva).

Experts will exchange experiences, examine snow leopard habitats, check previously installed and install new automatic cameras, and collect material for molecular genetic analysis.

“Experts will announce the results of the expedition in October, when they analyze samples, traces and camera trap frames,” the statement says.

During the expedition, scientists will also meet with local herders and remind them of the importance of snow leopard conservation in Russia.

“In Altai, cases of snow leopard attacks on livestock have become more frequent in recent years. In 2023, the Irbis Interregional Association compensated a cattle breeder in the Altai Republic for the loss of 27 rams. Funds were transferred to the Ubsunurskaya Kotlovina Nature Reserve (Republic of Tyva) to create a compensation herd to compensate for damage from future attacks by a rare predator,” the message says.
