Scientists from the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute, together with colleagues from St. Petersburg State University, while exploring the Larsemann Hills oasis, discovered a lake with bottom morphometric characteristics that are unique for this region. This happened in the area of the Progress Antarctic station, the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources reported on its website.
More than 150 freshwater lakes are known in the Larsemann Hills oasis, the ministry noted.
“According to previously published data, even in the deepest reservoirs of this oasis, there are no significant slopes and local differences in bottom elevations. This is their common feature. A detailed study of a small lake in the southern part of the Broknes peninsula, conducted by a group of Russian scientists, revealed completely new details.
This lake (area 4,385 sq.m) is elongated from south to north, its maximum length is 143 m, and its maximum width is 53 m.
“As a result of the study, depressions were found: with an average depth of most of the reservoir of about 1 meter, four narrow depressions are developed in its basin, the width of which does not exceed 5.5 meters, and the maximum depth reaches 27.8 meters. An analysis of the obtained materials and long-term field observations show that the morphological features of the Kolskoye Lake basin are unique and have not been previously noted within the oasis,” the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources explained.
This phenomenon has yet to be explained in further research.
