The Russian Geographical Society has supported the project «Landscapes of the North-Western Altai: from Russian pioneers and the Little Ice Age to ecological tourism and global warming». The research team included researchers from the Institute of Water and Environmental Problems of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Tigirek Reserve.
The territories to be explored were part of the Kolyvano-Kuznetsk defensive line three centuries ago, and in the 19th century they were part of the Altai Mountain District. At the end of 1999, the state natural reserve "Tigirek" was created in the Altai Territory, and after long-term use, the landscapes of Tigirek were withdrawn from economic circulation. Now the land of miners, Cossacks, pioneers has become a protected area, here animals and plants feel truly protected and free.
Field work on the study of landscapes will continue for several years, based on their results, a detailed map of the area will be created. After analyzing the collected data, scientists will characterize the current state of landscapes and track how they are recovering after the termination of economic activity.
The project will also involve adjacent regions of the Altai Republic and Kazakhstan.
