The press service of the Ubsunur Basin Nature Reserve reported the completion of a census of the endangered argali, or Altai mountain sheep. The research was conducted simultaneously in the transboundary territories of Russia and Mongolia: in the Saylyugem National Park, the Ubsunur Basin, the Altai Reserve, and the Mongolian Uvs Nuur Reserve.
Between October 27 and November 7, 318 argali individuals were counted in the territory of the "Ubsunur Basin". The previous year's census showed 233 individuals. Thus, it can be concluded that the species is stable in the Tuvan part of the range on the territory of the "Mongun-Taiga" cluster site.
Scientists also noted limiting factors affecting the argali population. These include livestock grazing and the development of the road network, such as the Kyzyl-Khaya - Kosch-Akach road.
The Ubsunur Basin Nature Reserve is located in the Republic of Tuva. Within its small territory, almost all natural zones of the Earth are represented: from mountain tundra and alpine meadows to diverse steppes and sandy deserts. Since 2003, the reserve has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
