A vast peony steppe has been discovered in the Kytmanovsky District of the Altai Krai. Its size has been compared to twenty football fields in the media. The find, which has become a sensation, was discovered by members of the "Caravan" Club of Friends of the Salair National Park and the Tigirek Reserve under the guidance of the national park's environmental education specialist Alexander Shchasko.
"Thickets of the rare steppe peony spread here on the slope of one of the gullies over an area of about 10-15 hectares. It is a sight of incredible beauty! The district's piggy bank of natural attractions has one more object," the Salair National Park reported on its website.
In addition, the "caravanners" found a new place where this flower grows near the quarry on the Kharaba River, a few kilometers from the village of Sosnovy Log. However, part of the population there has been destroyed by the quarry. But even here, a surprise awaited the members of the club.
"Among the remaining plants, the boys suddenly saw a white flower. It turned out to be an albino peony. A very rare find!" - noted in the national park.
A small population of prickly spurge was also found on the steppe slopes near the quarry - this species is quite rare in the area, the message says.
The discovery of a large peony steppe is a significant event for the Altai region. This means that the protected area of this rare plant is expanding, and there is a hope for its preservation. The new location of the albino peony is also of great interest to scientists.
