A Collective Study of Indigenous Peoples of Russia: A Contribution to a National Strategy

A collective study of indigenous peoples of Russia has formed the basis for proposals for the national biodiversity strategy through 2036, which is currently being developed by an interdepartmental working group of the Ministry of Natural Resources. The working group also includes experts from indigenous peoples. A list of national biodiversity targets was previously approved, four of which are directly related to the indigenous peoples of the Russian Federation.

The study, prepared as part of a comprehensive project by the Indigenous Peoples Union to build the capacity of indigenous peoples of Russia at the national and international levels, reflects a collective, verified position. It has been sent to all interested government agencies and international organizations. It is planned that this material will also be widely disseminated at the upcoming Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity in Yerevan.

The document was prepared following the Expert Seminar "Biodiversity Conservation and Climate Change in the Context of the Rights and Sustainable Development of Indigenous Peoples." The seminar was held by the Indigenous Peoples' Union with the support of the Federal Agency for Nationalities Affairs and in partnership with the Association of Indigenous Peoples of the North, Siberia, and the Far East of the Russian Federation and the UN Global Compact National Network in Russia. The seminar was co-organized by the All-Russian competitive educational program "Indigenous Peoples of Russia. School of Public Diplomacy."
