The press service of the Roscongress Foundation announced that for the third time, 25 endangered great bustards have been released into the steppes of Kalmykia as part of a program to restore their population. This time, the birds were brought from the Eastern Bird Conservation and Breeding Center in the United Arab Emirates, located in the Republic of Uzbekistan.
The first batch of great bustards was released into the steppes of Kalmykia in the fall of 2023, and the second last summer. The work is being carried out within the framework of a 25-year Program for the Restoration of the Great Bustard Population in the Northwestern Caspian Sea region. This large-scale project goes far beyond simple environmental protection activities. It demonstrates a systematic approach to solving complex environmental problems, including within the framework of international cooperation.
Over the past two years, monitoring has been conducted to identify the most suitable places for the release and restoration of birds. Scientists have studied the food base, characteristic of each season, the botanical composition and food diversity, temperature regime, and much more.
Kalmykia, thanks to its climate, landscape, and geographical location, has become an excellent option for release. It is expected that the project will not only preserve the unique species but also create new opportunities for the development of ecotourism in the region.
