The Kunming Agreement was signed in Montreal. One of its goals was to secure 30 percent of land, oceans and freshwater ecosystems by 2030. At the same time, the rights and interests of local communities and indigenous people must be respected.
The previous similar agreement was signed in 2010 in Japan and was calculated until 2020. His goal was to preserve wildlife on 17% of the land and 10% of the sea. This year, freshwater ecosystems were also added to land and sea.
The World Wildlife Fund called the agreement a great victory for the planet and humanity. Nevertheless, the fund director Dmitry Gorshkov noted that in order to achieve such ambitious goals, it is necessary to unite the efforts of business, the state, public organizations and each person individually.
“Russia has a very important role in the conservation of the planet’s biodiversity. Our country accounts for the largest part of the “world reserves” of untouched wildlife. Moreover, 13.5% of the country’s area is already specially protected natural areas, and if you count other measures protected by the world community, then we are talking about 25 percent of the land of our country.Russia can set an example for other countries in this regard," the press service quoted the director of the fund as saying.
"It is very important that the obligations assumed by the countries participating in the UN Convention on Biodiversity are not forgotten and fulfilled. For this, it is also necessary to update national strategies in accordance with the goals adopted today in Montreal," the message says.
