Andrey Nagibin, head of the Clean Arctic project office, said that Svalbard will become the tenth territory on the Arctic coast where volunteers work.
“This is a unique opportunity for the volunteers of the Clean Arctic to visit such an amazing place and become involved in an extremely important mission - saving the ecology of the Arctic,” he said.
The project expands not only the geography of cleaning, but also the functionality.
Ruslan Gubaidullin, Chairman of the Board of ANO "Clean Arctic", said that the country's most authoritative universities are involved in the cleaning. Thus, the scientific component is also enhanced.
“From the simple collection and disposal of waste accumulated during the Soviet years, we are also moving to serious research activities. For example, we deeply study the influence of the state of ecology on the climate of the planet. We share our observations with the scientific community,” said Gubaidullin.
Earlier, the head of the Ministry for the Development of the Far East, Alexei Chekunkov, said that tourism development is planned in Svalbard. To do this, the islands have to be properly cleaned up.
