"One of the main tasks set before the Russian Academy of Sciences is to conduct the research that is needed for the development of the economy, for its stability," Academician Valentin Parmon, chairman of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) said at a press conference in the TASS press center noting that currently there is a huge problem of restoring the technological sovereignty of Russia. "The technological sovereignty of Russia is a very multifaceted task, and if we talk about the task that is reflected in the studies that will be discussed today, this includes the development of incredibly large resources of our Arctic and cold zones in Siberia," the academician said, emphasizing that is why the research carried out within the framework of the Large Scientific Expedition was done by specialists from the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, which unites more than 100 scientific institutes of various profiles.

“We are no strangers to relations with Norilsk Nickel. You know that two years ago there was a major accident in the Norilsk region. Literally within three weeks after the plenipotentiary representative for the Siberian Federal District asked the Siberian branch to go to the area and give completely independent assessments of the situation that has developed there, within three weeks more than 50 specialists from 15 different institutes of the Siberian branch went there," Parmon said, noting that in general, in connection with this, three stages of scientific expeditions were carried out and completed in this area.

According to the academician, in order to be able to give reasoned recommendations to those who will develop the Arctic zone, comprehensive studies should be carried out so that those natural indicators that are most responsive to human influence can be identified.
“At the suggestion of the management of Norilsk Nickel, we tried to organize a very large, I must say, the largest expedition to the Arctic zone in the last 40 years. This expedition is multidisciplinary in order to be able to study biodiversity in the Arctic zone,” Parmon said.
