A map of the natural complexes of the Franz Josef Land archipelago has been created in the Russian Arctic National Park based on satellite images. It contains information about land areas that are free from glaciers and not covered by perennial snowfields. This was reported by the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia on its website.

The map makes it possible to identify the types of plant communities, the nature of soils, their moisture and drainage regime.

“Comparison of satellite data with field research materials gives an accurate picture of the state of the natural complexes of all the islands of the Franz Josef Land archipelago, both visited by researchers in the past and not covered by detailed expeditionary research,” the report says.

According to the director of the national park Alexander Kirilov, such a map is necessary for the scientific development of the Arctic.

“It lays the foundations for spatial monitoring of the northern islands and archipelagos in a wide range of areas: environmental, cryolithological, climatic, engineering-geological and geoecological,” Kirilov is quoted by the Ministry of Natural Resources.

The creation of such maps will give scientists a unique opportunity to record the state of the natural complexes of the island land and track the dynamics of their change in the future. The importance of such observations is due to the fact that the Arctic archipelagos are under the strongest influence of global climatic processes, which increase the instability of all components of the natural environment of these territories, the ministry said.

“The dynamics of natural complexes is enhanced by direct man-made impact. The study of the response of the Arctic ecosystems to various types of anthropogenic impact on the basis of satellite images contributes not only to the choice of the right measures to minimize the accumulated damage, but also to more careful development of these regions in the future,” the report says.
