The press service of the government reported that in the next eight years, 39.7 billion rubles will be allocated for the creation of the Ivan Frolov expedition ship. The new ship will house 20 scientific laboratories, as well as a helipad that can receive Mi-8, Mi-38 or Ka-32.
The ship will carry the cargo necessary for polar explorers and deliver groups of researchers with a total number of up to 170 people to the poles. Scientists on board the new ship will be able to conduct various projects, studying the ocean floor, atmospheric phenomena and space.
In addition, the "Ivan Frolov" will be able to land an expedition even on an unequipped shore and on ice.
The new vessel is expected tol replace two ships, Mikhail Somov and Akademik Fedorov, the first of which was built in 1975 and the second in 1987.
