The Murmansk region is preparing to host the 90th traditional North Festival. The program of the Polar Olympics, which will open on March 1, includes 17 sports and more than 20 sports and physical culture events, including all-Russian ones. Among them is the Russian Championship in winter swimming. It is expected that more than 6,500 athletes and over 32,000 spectators will take part in the Polar Olympics. This was reported by the Murmansk Region Tourism Committee on its website.
"It should be noted that the Russian Championship in winter swimming will be held in the country for the first time, since the rules of the sport were approved only last year and winter swimming was officially included in the all-Russian register of sports," the message says. In addition, as part of the North Festival, the Russian Championship in sports tourism, all-Russian competitions in figure skating, and the Russian Championship in amateur cycling will be held.
Traditionally, the Murmansk Ski Marathon will be held in Dolina Uyuta as part of the Russian Ski Marathon Cup "Russialoppet". In 2025, it will be held for the 51st time on March 29 and 30. In Dolina Uyuta, an extensive program will be organized for spectators. So, in the "Saami village" everyone will be able to ride in reindeer sledges, visit a husky enclosure, take a photo in a kuvasa, and take part in interactive activities. Guests can also enjoy traditional Saami dishes for free. In addition, the 65th North Festival for Students will be celebrated in the region.
Competitions in alpine skiing and speed skating, cross-country skiing, bandy, and national sports, snowboarding and luge, freestyle and biathlon are planned. The program of the North Festival for Students includes four all-Russian competitions in freestyle, speed skating, and two competitions in biathlon. At the opening ceremony of the Polar Olympics, it is planned to lay a "time capsule" with wishes from the current athletes to future generations.
