The Russian Academy of Sciences has supported the proposal to build a new scientific expedition vessel.

The initiative comes from Russian State Duma Deputy Alexander Spiridonov who proposed naming the new vessel in honor of the outstanding polar scientist Arthur Chilingarov.

The new vessel will be used to supply meteorological stations, carry out northern deliveries, conduct research and accomplish many other tasks in the Arctic, korabel.ru reports.

"I hope that we will be able to lay funds for a new vessel already in the autumn session when forming the federal budget," said Alexander Spiridonov.
