Eduard Yaungad, deputy of the Legislative Assembly of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District of Russia, addressed the participants of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP29), which is taking place in Baku.
He called for relying on the opinion of the indigenous peoples of the Russian Arctic in solving climate problems, who are the first to feel the changes in nature.
"The indigenous peoples of the Arctic can play a key role in adapting to new conditions arising from climate change. I urge you to involve representatives of the community as experts," Yaungad said.
He stressed that the way of life of indigenous peoples of the North directly depends on the state of the environment, so their experience is important.
Yaungad spoke about the Yamal measures for the conservation of northern nature: the creation and maintenance of nature reserves, environmental actions, the inclusion of flora and fauna under state protection, monitoring of permafrost.
The deputy stressed that Yamal has the highest rate of preserving the traditional way of life in Russia. 48,000 indigenous Northerners now live in the district, about 20,000 of them are nomads, sever-press.ru reports.
