12 plain bison from Denmark were brought to the north of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District to the Ingilor Nature Park. Scientists hope that the animals will take on the role of extinct mammoths 11.000 years ago and help restore the ancient ecosystem.

In addition, unusual animals will help the development of eco-tourism.

Bison adapt well in the Arctic, historically this is their natural environment. At first they will live next door to the musk oxen, and then the animals will be released for free grazing, ttelegraf.ru writes.

Steppe bison and woolly mammoths lived in the Russian Arctic from 2.6 million to 11.7 thousand years ago. Animals shaped the landscape by grazing and processing nutrients. When the climate became warmer, they died out.

In order to restore the ecosystem, its ability to absorb carbon, scientists are "relocating" large herbivores to the Arctic.
