In the format of the Clean Arctic project, from May 18 to September 30, 2023, several dozen youth cleaning expeditions will take place in the northern regions of the country.
The average duration of each such event will be about a week, the press service of the Arctic Development Project Office (PORA) reports. It is expected that this year the number of participants will double – and the volume of collected waste should increase by the same amount. In addition to the actual cleaning, volunteer teams will be engaged in eco-education.
The geography of the expeditions covers the entire Arctic zone. In particular, volunteer teams will visit Cape Kamenny, the villages of Polyarny, Pevek, Tiksi, Old Varandey and Brevennik Island. This year the project will start in Belomorsk, where the cleaning of the famous White Sea petroglyphs will be carried out. The plans include work on the territory of the Voitsky Padun waterfall, clearing landfills in Komi and the banks of the Pechora River in the Naryan–Mar area, cleaning at the Marresal polar station on the Yamal Peninsula.
Clearing the Arctic from accumulated garbage is the most important environmental task. Its solution will minimize the consequences of accumulated anthropogenic impact on the environment, and in addition, the activities of volunteer teams will create a reserve for the continuation of such events in the future. The Arctic Development Project Office is actively involved in this work: at the beginning of June 2023, as a year ago, PORA and Clean Arctic will hold a Single Arctic clean-up day.
