The press service of the Ministry of Natural Resources reported that a contract was signed between Roshydromet and the Joint-Stock Company Admiralty Shipyards for the construction of a new ship, the Ivan Frolov, which will be part of the fleet of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute.
It will be used to conduct marine research, personnel replacement and to provide Arctic and Antarctic stations. The ship, which now delivers polar explorers and cargo to Antarctica, was built in 1987, so it can be called outdated.
"Ivan Frolov" will combine a tanker, an icebreaker, a passenger, cargo and scientific vessel. It is expected that he will be able to remain in service for about 30-40 years. Its length will be almost 165 meters, displacement - about 25,000 tons, deadweight - about 9,200 tons.
The new ship will be designed to comfortably accommodate 240 people, including 70 crew members and up to 170 scientists and crew members. In accordance with the purpose, up to 20 laboratories can be equipped on board to carry out research from the ocean floor to the stratosphere. On board there is also a helicopter complex for two helicopters of the Ka-32, Mi-8 and Mi-38 types, a helipad and a hangar, which allows receiving and servicing these models of aircraft.
"Ivan Frolov" will be built by "Admiralty Shipyards". In the near future, specialists will begin designing, which will last throughout the year.
According to the head of Roshydromet, Igor Shumakov, today other countries are not expected to have projects similar to the Ivan Frolov vessel from colleagues from other countries who are exploring Antarctica.
