The traditional colorful Carnival will take place in Venice from February 14 to March 4. This year, the festival will be dedicated to the 300th anniversary of one of the most famous Venetians – the traveler and writer Giacomo Casanova.
The carnival will open on Valentine's Day in St. Mark’s Square, where visitors can enjoy a unique atmosphere, dance performances, and live music. Those interested will have the chance to take the stage and shout their love out loud for everyone to hear.
One of the main events will be a spectacular water parade along the Grand Canal. Rowers in masks will steer brightly decorated traditional boats, while fireworks and confetti will light up the sky above. The parade will conclude with a grand party and dance performances.
As is tradition, 12 "Marie" will take part in the carnival, chosen through a competition. Any young woman aged 18 to 28, who was born or lives in Venice, can enter. The winners will be dressed in luxurious outfits made by local ateliers. Additionally, one will be crowned the "Marie of the Year," receiving numerous gifts and the honorary title. The "Festival of the Marie" is a significant part of the Venetian Carnival, recalling the story from 973 when 12 Venetian girls were kidnapped by pirates.
Guests will have the chance to step into the era of Casanova at a masquerade ball held in a luxurious hotel overlooking the Grand Canal. The event will feature light effects, performances, and a fine dinner. Another exciting show will take place in the waters of the Arsenal, once home to a shipyard where battle ships were built. The water performance will depict the adventures of Giacomo Casanova through dance, music, and vivid fantasy imagery.
Throughout the festival, performers, clowns, mimes, musicians, and acrobats will entertain visitors on the streets of Venice. They will transport tourists into a world of street art, games, and music. People of all ages will be able to find something of interest: workshops, plays, lectures, or concerts.
