The latest data released by Sri Lanka’s Tourism Ministry indicates the total number of international tourist arrivals to the country in October 2019 was 118,743, in comparison to October last year. This is a decline of 22.5% as the arrivals were 153,123 in October 2018.
However, tourist arrivals have been gradually increasing following the suicide bomb attacks on churches and hotels in the country on Easter Sunday this year. Year-on-Year tourist arrivals declined 27.7% in September, 28% in August, 46% in July, 57% in June and 70.8% in May this year.
This month, the largest source market for tourists was India, followed by China and the United Kingdom. Asia and Pacific became the largest source of tourist traffic to Sri Lanka with 56% of the total traffic received in October 2019. Europe accounted for 37% of the total traffic, America 5%, Middle East 2% and Africa 0.5%.
India, China, United Kingdom, Germany and Russia were Sri Lanka's top five international tourist generating markets in October this year.
India was the largest source of tourist traffic to Sri Lanka with 28% of the total traffic received in October 2019. China accounted for 10% of the total traffic; while the United Kingdom, Germany and Russia accounted for 7%, 7% and 5% respectively.
