Queen Margret II of Denmark has opened a renovated museum dedicated to the brilliant Danish storyteller Hans Christian Andersen.

Two-thirds of the museum space is located underground. The aboveground part is made of cylindrical volumes with glass facades and latticed wooden panels. A giant garden with trimmed hedges and plants blooming all year round was planted on the square adjacent to the museum building.

The project of an unusual museum was created by the team of Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, who is known for his work on the Olympic stadium in Tokyo.

The renovation of the museum in Andersen's homeland in Odense is estimated at 50 million euros.

The son of a poor shoemaker and a laundress, Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) is world-famous for his fairy tales, which were successful during his lifetime.

The Little Mermaid, the Princess on the Pea, the Ugly Duckling, the Snow Queen, the Persistent Tin Soldier and other characters of his fairy tales made Andersen the most famous Danish writer in the world.
