Sakhalin has opened the most important modern airport complex for the island region, capable of comfortably receiving up to 5 million passengers a year – five times more than the old terminal. The project was implemented under an agreement with the Corporation for the Development of the Far East and the Arctic (KRDV) in the territory of advanced development "Mountain Air" in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk with the use of state support measures.
"Sakhalin Airport Terminal has become the largest and most modern in the Far Eastern Federal District," KRDV reported on its website.
The new terminal was the first to receive the Moscow – Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk flight of Rossiya Airlines. The board was traditionally greeted with a water arch.
According to the KRDV, the area of the terminal exceeds 47 thousand square meters – this is the largest terminal in the Far East. For the convenience of passengers, the airport is equipped with 6 telescopic ladders, 26 check-in counters, 5 escalators and 23 elevators. The fully automatic baggage handling system has 5 security levels and allows you to pass more than 1,200 suitcases and bags per hour, including oversized ones. The design of the terminal was based on the natural and cultural features of the islands.
