The Ministry of Natural Resources reports that today in Russia there are 231 specially protected natural areas of federal significance: 108 reserves, 63 national parks and 60 natural reserves. By 2024, as part of the Ecology national project, 24 new protected areas will appear in the territory of the Russian Federation, 5 of which were created in 2019.

Traditionally, for the All-Russian Day of Reserves and National Parks, many protected areas are preparing thematic environmental education events. Thus, the national park "Russian Arctic" (the Arkhangelsk region) celebrated the solemn date by moving to a new office and raising the flag of the institution. In the national park "Alania" (the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania) January 11, 2020 will be the day of environmental cinema. In the national park "Vodlozersky" (the Arkhangelsk region) the photo exhibition "Reserved Belt» will open. Specialists of the Daursky Nature Reserve (the Trans-Baikal Territory) will conduct field conservation lessons in local rural educational institutions in honor of the day of protected areas.

In the Zeya Reserve (the Amur Region) there will be a round table  on “Interaction of the Zeya Reserve and educational institutions in environmental education and public education”. National Park "Kislovodsk" (the Stavropol Territory) will invite everyone to the open day, which will be held in the visit center of the national park. The reserve "Kaluga Zaseki" (Kaluga Region) in honor of the professional holiday declared January 11, 2020 as the day of free access to the territory.

The year 2020 will be rich in anniversary dates. Ilmensky Reserve (the Chelyabinsk Region) this year will celebrate its centenary. The reserves “Lapland” (the Murmansk region), “Pechoro-Ilych” (the Komi Republic), “Central Forest” (the Tver region) and “Bashkir” (the Republic of Bashkortostan) will mark their 90th anniversaries. Lazovsky Reserve (the Primorsky Territory) is preparing for its 80th anniversary.

The Volga-Kama Reserve (the Republic of Tatarstan) will celebrate its 60th anniversary, and the Lower Svirsky Reserve (the Leningrad Region) will celebrate its fortieth anniversary. The reserves “Black Lands” (the Republic of Kalmykia), “Dzhugdzhursky” (the Khabarovsk Territory) and “Khankaisky” (the Primorsky Territory), as well as the National Park “Valdai” (the Novgorod Region) will become 30 years old. At the reserve “Erzi” (the Republic of Ingushetia), the twentieth anniversary is coming. Utrish Nature Reserve (Krasnodar Territory) and Saylyugemsky National Park (the Altai Republic) will mark the first significant anniversaries in 2020 - the tenth anniversary of their founding.

A holiday dedicated to specially protected natural areas has been celebrated in Russia since 1997. On this day 103 years ago, the country's first state nature reserve was created - Barguzinsky (the Republic of Buryatia).
