The government of Peru assured the world community that the construction of the new international airport in the city of Cusco, which will begin in June 2020, will not have a negative impact on the legendary Machu Picchu and other Inca archaeological sites.

According to the Minister of transport of Peru, Edmer Trujillo, although the airfield will be located outside the so-called Inca trail, which is one of the five most popular tourist routes in the world, UNESCO has asked the Peruvian authorities to assess how the increase in the influx of tourists may affect the state of the historical heritage.

The new airport will be located 58 km Southeast of Machu Picchu and 30 km North of Cuzco, the former capital of the Inca Empire. The air terminal will increase the influx of tourists by 60% – up to 6 million a year, the Peruvian authorities expect.

The capacity of the current airport of Cuzco is 3,000 passengers daily, but actually it takes up to 5,000 people.
The project to build a new airfield was criticized. Its opponents are concerned not only about the increase in tourist arrivals to Machu Picchu, which has been included in the UNESCO world heritage list since 1983, but also about the associated unfavorable prospects for the local population.

For their part, the Peruvian authorities say that the influx of travelers will only benefit the tourism sector, which is the main source of income in the region.
