The first tram, which also became an eco-tram, appeared in Qatar. Eco-friendly vehicles with electric drive, which uses revolutionary technology for charging batteries (modular on-board energy storage), began to transport passengers around the so-called "academic loop" - the campus of Education City, where there are numerous schools and universities - to the city stadium, built specifically for 2022 World Cup.

With a total of 24 stops, the tram connects schools, universities, research centers and institutions that are part of the Qatar Foundation for the Support of Science and Education - the Qatar Foundation (QF).

The tram designed by the QF Capital Projects Management has been specifically designed for the area. Nineteen modern Avenio trams have an integrated energy storage system that eliminates the need for overhead power cables; the tram can go from one stop to another without recharging.

Each tram is equipped with an air-conditioned system and has 64 seats, including special places for the physically challenged.

According to the creators of the first tram line, the tram line around Education City makes this area a more environmentally friendly and accessible environment as it reduces the use of other vehicles and emissions of harmful substances into the atmosphere. In addition, thus, people receive new information about the importance of using environmentally friendly vehicles and the health benefits that alternative means of transportation can offer.

Qatar Foundation’s Chief Operating Officer Ghanim Hassan al-Ibrahim noted on the occasion of the launch of the first tram in the emirate that the launch of the Education City tram marks an important milestone in the development of sustainable transport in Qatar. The characteristics and purpose of the tram make it a transport network that clearly shows Qatar’s desire to use the latest technology in the interests of society and the environment.

According to him, the fund encourages people in the emirate to make the environment cleaner and more environmentally friendly by encouraging them to stop using cars.

Three multi-storey car parks near tram stops will allow people to park cars and use the tram to get to their final destination. Separate tram stops are connected to the Doha metro station. It is estimated that this transport artery will play a key role during the Qatar World Cup in 2022, when thousands of football fans will take part in watching matches at Education City Stadium.

Speaking at the UN General Assembly this fall, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, promised to make the upcoming World Cup in the emirate not only pan-Arab, but also environmentally friendly, with minimal carbon footprint. Gradually, the small emirate on the Arabian Peninsula fulfills its promises.
