The Caucasian reserve is the main obstacle to the construction of the Kislovodsk-Sochi highway. This was announced by the Governor of the Stavropol Territory, Vladimir Vladimirov.
“We can’t go 14 kilometers along the biosphere reserve. We are trying to go through it, we are working on the construction of the tunnel, but the pits must be brought up to the surface from the tunnel. The engineers are holding discussions about it. Moreover, the object is included in the UNESCO heritage list. This work is not a matter of a year, or two, or even five years,» the head of the region said at a press conference.
According to Vladimirov, the authorities are even ready to expand the boundaries of the biosphere reserve as part of the “compensatory measures”.
“So far we cannot break through this wall. Nobody can cross the ecology,” the governor concluded.
The first road project from Stavropol to Sochi was developed in 1961. The Cherkessk-Adler highway passes through the village Pregradnaya and the village of Krasnaya Polyana. Today, there are two projects for the construction of a highway from Kavminvod to the Olympic capital.
The Kislovodsk - Adler highway is 334 kilometers long and the Cherkessk - Adler highway is 273 kilometers long. Today, the communication between the Kavminvody and Sochi is carried out either through Krasnodar (720 km) or via Maykop (600 km through the mountains). The cost of building a new highway was previously estimated by the authorities of Stavropol at 200 billion rubles. However, the initiatives were not supported. Rosprirodnadzor revealed in the state environmental review a number of violations and contradictions to federal laws. The highways to a certain degree could affect the territory of the Caucasus Nature Reserve and Sochi National Park.
