The Audi E-tron electric car rally kick-started the ElectroMobilization-2021 festival of electric vehicles last Wednesday at the Vorobyovy Gory, Moscow. The rally will take place along the route Moscow - Dobrograd (Vladimir region) - Nizhny Novgorod - Cheboksary - Innopolis - Kazan - Ulyanovsk.

The sales market for electric vehicles in Russia is characterized by an increase of 95%. This was announced at the opening of the festival by its co-chairman - State Secretary of the Ecological Chamber of Russia Vadim Petrov. According to him, the electric transport market in Russia is currently in its infancy.

«In 2013, the Russian fleet of electric vehicles was no more than 1,000 units. Summing up the results for 2020, we see that 687 new electric vehicles were sold in Russia, compared to 2019, in which only 353 cars were sold, the market is characterized by a growth of 95%. In general, the expansion of the car market will continue throughout this decade. By 2030, the planned share of electric vehicles in sales will amount to 48%,» Petrov explained.

The expert noted that the end of internal combustion engines is brought closer by several factors at once: stricter requirements for the toxicity of exhaust gases, global warming and, of course, electric vehicles. Among the main directions of state support for market development, Vadim Petrov sees stimulation of manufacturers and consumers of electric transport, limiting the production and use of non-environmentally friendly modes of transport, as well as ensuring demand at first through purchases for both authorities and state-owned companies.

World statistics show the global trend for electrification. Global sales for 2020 totals 3.1 million units - the share of their sales in the total volume of cars amounted to almost 5% against 2.5% in 2019. A particular growth in the electric market was noted in Europe (according to EV-Volumes), it increased by 137 % compared to 2019. For the first time since 2015, Europe has taken the leading position in terms of sales of electric cars, overtaking China.

Norway remains the undisputed leader in the world in terms of the distribution of electric cars within the country (74.8%). In 2020, half of the cars sold here are electric powered. The second place is taken by Iceland (45%), followed by Sweden (32.2%), the Netherlands (24.95%), Finland (18.1%). The smallest share of electric transport in the total amount was recorded in China (6.2%) and the USA (2.3%). In the ranking of countries by market size in the top five: China -1337 thousand cars, Germany - 398 thousand, USA - 328 thousand, France - 194 thousand, Great Britain - 181 thousand.

In terms of the number of electric buses in operation, China ranks first in the world, the Netherlands is second and Russia is third. At the same time, this country is a leader in the two most common types of electric public transport - tram and trolleybus.

In Russia, Moscow is the leader among the regions, where sales of electric vehicles in 2020 amounted to 240 units, 69 cars were sold in St. Petersburg, and 60 units in the Moscow region.

According to Vera Strukova, deputy head of the State Budgetary Institution “Mospriroda” of the Department of Nature Management and Environmental Protection of the Moscow City Complex, Moscow is a pilot region for the transition to electric transport. «The city's plans for the next 10 years are to completely abandon public transport on diesel fuel and switch to electric transport. By the end of 2020, thanks to the new urban electric transport and electric buses, CO2 emissions in Moscow have decreased by 130 thousand tons. This experience will allow introducing green technologies in other cities of the country,» she said.

An important factor in the development of the electric transport market in Russia is the creation of an infrastructure for refueling electric vehicles and providing relevant services. Among the first 10 regions of Russia, the transport tax for owners of electric vehicles of all forms of ownership until 2025 was canceled by the Ulyanovsk region. Plans for the development of charging infrastructure have been approved in the region - opening by 2024 24 "fast" stations (from 50kW DC) and 240 "slow" (up to 22kW AC).

Also, regional standards for urban planning were approved in terms of the design of parking spaces for equipment with charging stations for electric vehicles. According to Vadim Pavlov, Director General of the Agency for Technological Development of the Ulyanovsk Region, the region will expand the network of charging stations. “We will attract investors for the development of the network, so that there are more and more of them,” Pavlov said.

The slogan of the festival, which will end on September 12, is "Electric mobilization of the whole country!" In addition to the all-Russian electric car rally on electric cars Moscow - Ulyanovsk, it will host a conference on unmanned and electric transport, as well as an exhibition of electric vehicles and the opening of the first ultrafast charging station in Ulyanovsk for the City Day.
