Researchers from the institutes of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences have begun work in the Murmansk Region. They will look into the biodiversity of the fauna in the areas where the enterprises of the Kola Division of Norilsk Nickel are located.
The first scientists of the large scientific expedition have already conducted a bird count in the area of the Murmansk port, where the Murmansk transport branch of the company is located.
The predominant bird species in the port area is the Siberian gull. Four families of such gulls settled right at the anchor of the legendary nuclear-powered icebreaker "Lenin".
In the near future, Siberian scientists will conduct field surveys in Monchegorsk. In the vicinity of the city of metallurgists, researchers will study about 20 km of accounting routes.
The next step of the large expedition will be the Pechenga municipal district of the Murmansk region. In Nikel and Zapolyarny, researchers will count birds at five points at different distances from industrial sites. Areas with the lowest possible human impact - nature reserves - will be used as control points.
“This is part of a big job. Bird census is carried out as part of the study of biodiversity. In addition, for three weeks, theriologists will be studying mammals, among them there will be botanists, entomologists, soil scientists who will conduct research. It will be a large group of 15 people,” said Alexander Makarov, researcher at the Institute of Animal Systematics and Ecology of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Ornithological research by the specialists of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences will be completed on June 15. But other studies will go on. Their result will be a large summary report on the state of biodiversity in the operation areas of the Nornickel Kola Division.
