Russian Arctic National Park announces a competition for young scientists

Russian Arctic National Park announced a competition for undergraduate and postgraduate students studying biology to conduct independent research on the effects of soil pollution caused by oil products in the territory of Arctic.

According to the head of the ECOSLED (Eco Footprint) project, adviser to the director of the Russian Arctic National Park, Dmitry Kryukov the fuel depots, though liquidated, caused soil pollution. 

As part of the monitoring, “the employees of the national park and scientific organizations are studying the temporal and spatial dynamics of the contamination,” added Kryukov. He said that for the 2020 field season, the task is to compare the state and species composition of vegetation on the surface of contaminated and non-contaminated sites, as well as the flora and fauna of freshwater water bodies and the area of the sea coast. 

The winner of the competition will be given the opportunity to implement the declared program of work on one or two islands of the Franz Josef Land archipelago by taking part in the field work of the Russian Arctic National Park in the summer of 2020. 

Requirements for the applications: 

Information about the applicant: name, date of birth, educational institution, years of study, topics of term papers and diploma theses (if any);
Name, post, academic title (academic degree) of the supervisor;
A brief description of the field work methodology;
Field work program: it is necessary to enumerate the planned operations and expected results; The list of equipment available to the applicant and necessary for the work; A brief description of the processing methodology for the estimated field results - how they will help assess the impact of pollution on the state and species composition of flora and fauna; 

Applications can be sent to the email: rus-arc@rus-arc.ru and drk62@yandex.ru with the subject - "ECOSLED Project» - until January 1, 2020. 

The competition is held as part of the ECOSLED project, supported by PJSC Rosneft.
