A Chinese-Russian scientific laboratory has been opened in Heilongjiang Province (China) to preserve and restore the Amur tiger population. This is reported on the website of the Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IPEE RAS).
"The laboratory was created thanks to the support of two leading organizations in the field of wildlife research and protection - the Center for the Study of Felines at the Chinese Northeastern University of Forestry and the A.N. Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution of the Russian Academy of Sciences," the message says.
As part of the laboratory's work, it is planned to create a library of genes of Amur tigers and Far Eastern leopards, monitor and study diseases of wild animals, as well as observe the behavior of Amur tiger cubs.
"The Amur tiger and the Far Eastern leopard have been returning to China in recent years, primarily due to environmental measures in the Russian Federation. Wild animals know no borders, and they need to be studied and preserved together with their Chinese colleagues. We hope that joint research within the framework of the newly created laboratory will allow the tiger to be preserved in Russia and China," said Sergey Naidenko, Director of the IPEE RAS, whose words are quoted in the message.
