The Russian Geographical Society and the Northern Fleet announce a competitive selection of participants on an expedition to the Arctic archipelagos, says the Russian Geographical Society.
The expedition will be of interest to historians, surveyors, cartographers, geologists, oceanologists, volcanologists, biologists, researchers and other specialists.
There will be two units to go to the Arctic: the first will work in August 2020, the second - from August to October 2020.
A comprehensive expedition to the Arctic archipelagos will be devoted to several memorable dates: the 75th anniversary of the Great Victory, the 175th anniversary of the Russian Geographical Society, the 110th anniversary of the Hydrographic Expedition of the Arctic Ocean, the 120th anniversary of the Russian Polar Expedition and the 145th anniversary of the birth of a famous Arctic explorer, Vladimir Rusanov.
As part of the expedition, a search will be organized for underwater historical sites in the area of the Northern Island of Novaya Zemlya, the Taimyr Peninsula, the Novosibirsk and Lyakhovsky Islands, the De Long Islands, Wrangel Island, the Chukchi Peninsula, Severnaya Zemlya and Franz Josef Land. Specialists will also be invited to explore the cultural and natural heritage sites located on these islands.
Along the route, the project participants will establish memorials in honor of the expeditions of famous Russian travelers.
This is the third joint Arctic expedition of the Russian Geographical Society and the Northern Fleet.
