The first line of equipment was put into operation at the Nadezhda Metallurgical Plant (NMZ). It was installed as part of the so-called “sulfur program” of the Norilsk Nickel company. The project is expected to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions from the plant by 5.6 times, as per Interfax.

The remaining lines of equipment, which have already been installed but not yet put into operation, are planned to be put into operation in 2024. After they are launched and reach the design parameters, as director of the enterprise Vitaly Muravyov said to Interfax, NMZ will reduce the volume of sulfur dioxide emissions from the current 1.1 million tons to 197 thousand tons, the agency writes.

The total investment in the project will be over 180 billion rubles. The amount includes costs for the infrastructure project for the development of the Mokulaevsky limestone deposit in the Talnakh region, which is used in the purification technology under the “sulfur program, Interfax said.

The agency recalls that Norilsk Nickel’s “sulfur program” is a comprehensive modernization of the production facilities of the NMZ and the Copper Plant in Norilsk to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions. It is expected that sulfur dioxide emissions in the Polar Division of the company should be reduced by 45% from the base level of 2015 - after implementation at NMZ, and up to 90% - after implementation at the Copper Plant.
