The International World Travel Awards 2020 will be held in Moscow on November 28 next year, according to the official site of the event.
The deputy mayor of Moscow, Natalia Sergunina, said that the decision of the organizers is the best assessment of the work done in recent years.
The World Travel Awards have existed since 1993. It recognises winners in more than 80 nominations. It is considered the most prestigious award in the touristic industry. The winners are the best hotels, airlines, tour operators, cities, resorts, attractions and so on.
Tourists and tourism industry experts take part in the voting. The World Travel Awards Grand Tour is held annually - a series of gala ceremonies that covers the entire world. Its culmination is the grand gala at the end of the year.
In 2019, the final will be held on November 28 in the city of Musqat (Oman). Moscow is nominated for the awards in three main categories: World’s Leading Festival & Event Destination, World’s Leading Sports Tourism Destination and World’s Leading City Destination.
According to the mayor's office, last year, 23.5 million tourists visited Moscow - almost twice as much as in 2010. According to the results of 2018, tourism's contribution to the budget of the city reached 118 billion rubles. Such revenues from the tourism sector in 2010 were about four times lower.
The capital of Russia is recognised in various tourist ratings every year. National Geographic, CNN, The Wall Street Journal, The Daily Telegraph, Lonely Planet recommend the city as a desirable tourist destination.
During the last New Year holidays, from December 30, 2018 to January 8, 2019, 90 percent of rooms was booked in Moscow. Four- and five-star hotels in the very center of the city showed record bookings - they were 95 percent full.
During the celebration of the City Day, Moscow was full of tourists as well. On September 7 and 8, 2019, hotel bookings also exceeded 90 percent, with 65 percent of the guests being foreign tourists. Tourists from China, Spain, the USA, Israel and Argentina showed the highest rate of arrivals in the capital of Russia.
