Over 29 million larch trees will be planted in the Sakhalin Region within five years. This is provided for by the agreement between the Federal Forestry Service and the Vanino Forestry Center on cooperation in the framework of the first climate project in the forests of the region, the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources reported on its website.

"The goal is to increase the absorption capacity of forests and achieve a carbon balance in the region through the implementation of a climate project in forests," the report says.

According to the agency, such a measure will absorb 1.5 million CO2-equivalents of greenhouse gases.

The Vanino Center has previously developed a technology for gentle preparation of the soil for planting forests. With the help of a new method of afforestation, new forests will appear in the swampy area of the Poronai forestry on Sakhalin, the report says.
