The European Union and the Mauritius Tourism Authority (MTA) have signed an agreement on financing the development of ecotourism on the island of Rodriguez, which is part of the Republic of Mauritius, according to the French news agency Franceinfo.
The agreement was signed under the Charter for the protection of the environment of the island of Rodriguez. Taking this step Europe made a commitment to support the development of sustainable tourism in the region in order to create an “ecological” destination on the island.
The agency quoted Vincent Degert, the new ambassador of the European Union to Mauritius, as saying: “Sustainable development, environmental protection and climate change are the focus of the external work of the European Union. The support we have provided to the MTA for the development of ecotourism in Mauritius and Rodriguez is fully consistent with our policy to support sustainable tourism.”
The Rodriguez community, like the rest of the world's population, is very concerned about climate change on Earth and its impact on the future of tourism.
However, the support to the development of ecotourism will allow the island to maintain its natural beauty and innocence. To this end, thousands of tour operators will reportedly take courses at the Vatel Training Center, which specialises in sustainable tourism to be able to provide qualified and «green» services to its customers.
The development of tourism in Mauritius is essential for the country’s economy as it is the source of foreign exchange revenue. It contributes about 14 % of Mauritius GDP.
