“The Capital Cup in sports ornithology is an interesting and unusual event held in natural areas for photographers and bird lovers. The participants of the competition make a great contribution to scientific ornithological monitoring,” said Vera Strukova, deputy head of the State Budgetary Institution “Mospriroda”.
She noted that in autumn the participants of the Cup of the Capital in sports ornithology in the Kuzminki-Lublino natural and historical park managed to photograph and identify 57 species of birds, of which 21 are listed in the Red Book of Moscow. Among the rare birds of the Red Book, there were honey buzzard with 0 rarity category, marsh harrier and coot with 1 category, hobby falcon and forest pipit with 2 rarity category. “The most common species were the great tit, mallard and hooded crow,” Strukova said.
Competitions in sports ornithology are held annually - in spring and autumn. They are based on photographing and further identification of bird species.
As explained in Mospriroda, this is not only a game, but also part of scientific ornithological monitoring to collect information about migratory and nesting birds living in natural areas. The participants have an important task to clarify the existing list of species, among which there are rare species listed in the Red Book of Moscow and the Red Book of Russia.
