United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Secretary General Zurab Pololikashvili said on Tuesday that Chinese tourists can help boost Egypt's tourism sector, which has plummeted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to him, China is a very important market not only for Egypt, but for the whole of Europe and other countries
Pololikashvili arrived in Egypt with an official visit on Saturday.
He met President Abdel Fattah Saeed Hussein Khalil el-Sisind other officials and discussed with them new tourism projects in Egypt that will help restore the sector amid the outbreak of the coronavirus.
The problem with Chinese tourists now is that they have to go through a two-week quarantine upon returning home. This greatly influences the choice of destinations for Chinese tourists.
Egypt, which has reported 97,478 COVID-19 cases and 5,280 deaths to date, resumed international flights in early July following the lifting of a partial curfew in effect since late March and the reopening of restaurants, cafes, theatres and cinemas. Hotels, museums and archaeological sites are also open, but the number of tourists admitted to the attractions has been limited.
Some 600 hotels across the country that adhere to security protocols have been cleared to reopen. However, they have pledged to work with reduced occupancy.
All travellers arriving in Egypt will be required to present a negative PCR test.
Egypt attracts hundreds of thousands of Chinese tourists every year for its historic landmarks and sunny sandy beaches.
